Like it or loath it, the future is electric!
As oil supplies become exhausted it looks very likely that the initial switch will be to move over to electric vehicles. There are other technologies of course, but for the mass market it does look like electricity will be the immediate answer.
It's nothing new of course. You may be surprised to learn that electric cars have been on the go as far back as the 1830s, and in the late 19th century and early part of the 20th electric cars actually outsold all other types!
But the continuing development and falling price of gasoline gradually saw petrol cars becoming a much cheaper option and then of course Henry Ford's production line pretty much pushed electric cars into the ditch.
The 1960s and 70s saw a revival in interest in electric vehicles as environmental awareness began to rise but the cost and limited range of these vehicles was barrier to success. In the 90s some remarkable electric vehicles were produced which were often very highly rated by their owners. There is some controversy as to why these projects were shelved - eg the EV1 by GM Motors and Toyota Rav 4.
But where are they now?
Well, it's starting to look good as most manufacturers are working hard to develop the concept faster and further than ever before! |
